A Few Thoughts on Integrity
Have you thought about integrity? It isn't a word that I hear much any more. Dictionary.com defines "integrity" in three different ways. The first definition, and the one about which I speak is as follows:
"adherence to moral and ethical principles;
soundness of moral character; honesty."
(Follow the link if you would like to read the entire definition on Dictionary.com.)
Integrity sometimes means turning down a job, because you don't agree with some of the standards and procedures. It sometimes means, not promoting work that you can't stand behind, either because of flaws in the product/service or because you don't know anything about it. When it comes down to it, sometimes you have to choose between money and integrity, friends and integrity, family and integrity, power and integrity, and prestige and integrity. The road to integrity is not always an easy one.
Thinking about it, maybe integrity is something you think more about as you mature. I know that I didn't really think about it much in my youth. I mean, I tried to be good. I tried to do the right thing. However, integrity goes further than that. It is sticking up for what you believe no matter what the cost.
I can't say that I have mastered integrity. I mean, I think it is a work in progress for most people. However, I do find people who show a great deal of integrity inspirational. I guess that is why I chose to write about the topic of integrity today.
